A Winnipeg courtroom heard chilling details of the murder of 24-year-old Roxanne Fernando who was pregnant at the time she was killed.
On Thursday, Nathanael Plourde, 21, and Jose Toruno, 21, both pleaded guilty for their roles in the killing of Fernando in February 2007. [The] court heard details of how Fernando was still breathing when she was dumped in a snowy ditch after being beaten twice.
Court was told that Fernando and Plourde had a brief relationship. She wanted it to continue, but he didn't. Plourde drove her to Little Mountain Park on a Valentine's date and later beat her with a wrench several times. Her feet were bound with tape and she was thrown in the trunk of the car.
Plourde later picked up his friend Toruno and the two drove to an isolated spot in Winnipeg's northwest corner where she was beaten again and thrown in a ditch.
Both men expressed remorse at the hearing but the judge said they deserved every minute of their sentences.
Friday morning, a judge gave Plourde a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years after he pleaded guilty to first degree murder. Toruno was also given a life sentence with no chance of parole for 15 years after he pleaded guilty to second degree murder.
A victim impact statement from Fernando's mother said there was no word to describe the loss or pain of losing her daughter.

A Garden Hill First Nation man who subjected his ex-girlfriend to three days of terror and violence has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Jason Knott, 28, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, assault, uttering threats, theft and two counts of breaching court orders he have no contact with the woman.
"This is a severe, long beating -- those are the only words to describe it," said Judge Linda Giesbrecht. "You have absolutely no regard for the feelings of another human being."
The 25-year-old victim told Knott in January 2008 she was breaking off their 18-month long relationship when Knott invited her to his home "for one last kiss," Crown attorney Wendy Friesen told court.
Shortly after her arrival, Knott gouged her eyes with his thumbs and punched her in the head. Knott held her captive until the next morning when he became apologetic and offered to take her to Winnipeg. Knott and the victim boarded a plane for Winnipeg that same day and rented a room at the Maryland Hotel.
Knott's contrition was short-lived. The two began drinking heavily and Knott resumed his attack on the woman, punching and kicking her repeatedly in the face. The woman locked herself in the bathroom when Knott threatened to throw her out a window, Friesen said.
"What's six years (in prison)?" Knott told the woman. "It's a walk in the park."
Fearing Knott would make good on his threats to kill her, the woman exited the bathroom only to be beaten again, Friesen said. The next day, Knott punched, kicked and dragged the woman as they walked in the vicinity of McPhillips Street Station casino. Knott robbed the woman of her bank card and told her: "Now you're not going anywhere."
Casino staff came to the woman's assistance after part of the attack was caught on security video. The woman was treated at hospital for a broken jaw, cheekbone, eye sockets and nose and extensive bruising to her entire body.
Police arrested Knott 10 days later after he turned up drunk at the Health Sciences Centre.
Knott has 29 criminal convictions, including two for assaulting the same victim.
Defence lawyer John Corona had little to say in Knott's favour, and blamed his actions on an upbringing "rife with domestic violence and alcohol abuse."
"He clearly has anger management issues when he drinks and control issues in relation to women," Corona said. "This is the way he was brought up."
Knott claimed he was drunk and had no memory of the most recent assaults.
"If you are drinking you are a very dangerous, violent man," Giesbrecht said.
Giesbrecht credited Knott the double-time equivalent of two years time served, reducing his remaining sentence to two years

Veteran police officer sentenced for stalking ex-wife in May - apparently rapes her last weekend

Daryl Lee Evans, a 25 year veteran of the Winnipeg Police Department, pleaded guilty to violation of a probation order and failure to comply with probaiton for contacting his ex-wife after she wanted him to leave her alone. He repeatedly e-mailed and called the woman, and even went over to her house. The probation he served stemmed from incidents 19 months ago with the same woman.
The guilty pleas come 19 months after Evans received a one-year suspended sentence on similar charges. Defence lawyer Richard Wolson said Evans finally realizes his marriage is over.
"A marked change has occurred and he has moved on with his life," Wolson said.
Wolson and special prosecutor Don Knight jointly recommended an 18-month suspended sentence as part of a plea bargain that would spare the victim from testifying in court. Knight said the offences were "on the low end of the scale" and did not involve threats or violence.
Judge Linda Giesbrecht accepted the joint recommendation but not the characterization of the harassment as minor.
Whether someone is saying 'I love you and I don't want to break up' ... that can be extremely distressing to someone who doesn't want contact."
(Update 7-30-08) Evans apparantly is at it again. The Winnipeg Free Press reports that a 25 year veteran of the Winnipeg Police Department broke into and violently sexually assaulted an ex-wife last weekend. He was arrested Sunday and charged with sexual assault, burglary, and assault for raping and choking the woman. The woman, who's still in the hospital, had her eyes covered with tape and her limbs bound. She managed to call 911 and her husband appeared in court Monday.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press, the husband and wife's names are banned from Canadian publication due to her status as a sexual assault victim. However, the Free Press says that
The former sergeant was on an unsupervised 18-month probation order after being convicted in May of failing to comply with a court-imposed no-contact order and violating the protection order against him held by his former wife. He was also given a suspended sentence and a $100 fine.
Only Daryl Evans meets that criteria, so Victimized Over The AOC assumes it's him until further notice.

A Winnipeg man controlled every facet of his stepdaughter's life to bully her into years of sexual abuse, a judge said Monday.
"This is the most egregious form of sexual exploitation short of slavery with handcuffs attached," said Justice Morris Kaufman before sentencing the 54-year-old man to nine years in prison.
"The accused kept the victim under his complete and total control, picking her clothes, approving her friends, and attempting to control every facet of her life." The man -- who can not be named to protect the identity of his now 30-year-old victim -- was convicted following a trial last summer of sexual assault, sexual touching, procuring for the purposes of prostitution, and uttering threats. He was acquitted of an additional charge of sexual assault with a weapon, involving accusations he used a syringe to inject water into her breasts to make them bigger.
Kaufman called the man "a sly manipulator of facts" and "a bully who used verbal threats and violence to get his way."
"When confronted with the fact he sent her to get contraceptives, he claimed with a straight face that he was just looking out for her welfare and did not know who she was going to have sex with," Kaufman said. The man gave credibility to his threats by recounting his assault on his own grandmother and described his abuse of the girl as "bonding," Kaufman said.
According to court documents, the woman told police her stepfather started groping her when she was 10 years of age and raped her when she was 14. The man claimed the two were involved in a five-year consensual sexual relationship beginning when she was 15.
The victim said when she was 12, the man and her mother asked if she would agree to carry the man's baby. The girl's mother became pregnant before the proposal could be acted upon.
"Today, I feel that my mother all but handed me over to (my stepfather) by making it clear that he could have sex with me without her doing anything about it," the woman wrote in a court document.
When the girl was 15, she and her stepfather moved into their own home. She became pregnant with his baby but suffered a miscarriage.
The woman said her stepfather threatened her with death if she told anyone of the abuse, claiming he had killed his grandmother with a hammer.
On the victim's 18th birthday, the man dressed her up in pink tights, took her to a massage parlour and put her to work as a prostitute, she told police. The man claimed it was her choice to become a prostitute and he only suggested going to a massage parlour to keep her off the streets.
