A Tolono, IL man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape and burglary. Howard “Wes” Wilson pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault and burglary charges just before the rape trail was to start. Wilson admitted to Campaign County Judge Harry Clem that he raped his ex-girlfriend on May 27 and May 28 of last year at a Tolono home.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Dill, the victim and Wilson had been in a dating relationship and that Wilson got upset over the woman’s seeing another man. Dill said that Wilson beat the woman, stabbed her in the leg with a knife, and sexually assaulted her with a candle lighter.
In the burglary cases, Wilson admitted that he burglarized two bars in the first week on February 2008. On February 5, he broke into the Game On Sports Bar in Sadorus, and on February 8, he broke into the Sidney Saloon in Sidney. The motive was to steal cash so he could travel to St. Louis and gamble with another woman.
Wilson was ordered to pay $9490 in restitution for the tavern break-ins. Prior convictions included domestic and aggravated battery, home invasion, DUI, criminal trespass to motor vehicle, arson, and criminal damage to state supported property. The last charge was given for firebombing a prosecutor's office. Two charges of aggravated domestic battery were dismissed against Wilson in exchange for his plea. The 20 year sentence breaks down as follows – 10 years for the criminal sexual assault, and 5 years per burglary. If Wilson earns all of the good time he’s capable of earning in prison, he’ll serve 13.5 years (8.5 years for the sex assault and 2.5 years per burglary).
